Traffic Signal Crossing System: Is it Possible?

We drive, we come across signals, we stop, we wait, we go and this goes on.

A model where we don’t have to stop or wait.

Would this be possible?

A crossing is generally 4 directions where person coming from 1 direction can go in 4 other directions (including U turn).

4 directions would be U Turn (U), Left Turn (L), Straight (S), Right Turn (R).

U and L are being used without signals. Making a U passage much before signal. L is generally a Free Turn.

Now how to make S and R free. Total 8 free passage ways required at all times (for people coming from all 4 directions).

Three options could be there. 1 is by making flyovers. It’s already implemented. Other could be without making it. Third could be long go.

Let’s look into the second option i.e. without flyovers.

Think of a scenario of a busy road without signals near a market where everyone is going from here to there and there to here. You will notice that speed is slow and people are able to move their vehicles.

A similar concept on a 4 way crossing. As total 4 passages are there, there would be 3 speed zones. Zone 1 nearest to crossing of length L1, Zone 2 after zone 1 of length L2, Zone 3 after Zone 2 of length L3. Each zone will have a specific speed. Each person/vehicle has to follow this speed.

4 blocks would be there. NE, SE, NW, SW. All these make Zone 0. NE is area where road from North and East will meet. Similar for other areas.

For vehicles in each direction there should be distance of D3 i.e. 3 cars between every 2 cars. vehicles should move in Zone 0 and Zone 1 in such a way that this distance is always maintained. Vehicles would be moving in synchronise way.  Such that a vehicle going from North to South and other going from west to east passes without stopping. It should be like when V1 vehicle 1 from North to South is leaving Zone 1 and entering Zone 0 (to go to NE) then V2 from West to east is still in Zone 1. When V1 reaches SE then V2 reaches NW. V3 from South to North during this time would be still in Zone 1 and will enter Zone 0 at SW when V2 will be at NE. When V3 reaches NW then V4 from East to West will reach SW. At this time V1 would be in South direction.

Long Go (LU System)

Just Take a Free Left and Free U.

If you are coming from North and you want to go West. First go East (L) then go ahead for a km or so then take a U. Then travel a km again. There would be a L towards South take that. Then move for a km again and take a U. Then travel a km again. There would be a L towards West take that. And you are on your way home. This took 4 kms extra with some more time. It could be less than 1 km also. Implementation have to be seen based on actual traffic.
