DTH service has been made mandatory in India over last years. Started with small set of cities couple of years back, now it is mandatory for whole India. Earlier people used antennas to catch television signal, then came big dish (when Zee TV came) and local cable tv networks and dish TV. Government had made it mandatory to use DTH service instead of cable service.
Let us point out some good and bad of DTH as compared to older options. Let’s start with some bad ones and then good ones so to end up the article with smiles.
Some bad experiences
- Expensive – DTH service is expensive. One has to generally pay more than cable network for minimum channels of more channels
- More dishes – A dish has to be installed generally on Roof tops. Every house has it now. In case of societies these are even more. Houses doesn’t look good with a dish
- Electricity – Dish uses electricity. Adds to bill
- Bad Weather – Goes off during bad weather
- Annoying – So much annoying. Ads everywhere on screen. Attention seeking ads
- You see DTH provider logo on every channel you browse. Why is this logo required? When I know that this DTH service I am using then why logo is required?
- Channel name – Though it comes in cable network also. But there should be a way to get rid of it
- Countdown – Countdown of a new show, movie, popular episode is shown. It is not required. Actual channel content is hidden, attention is not proper and not a good experience
- Default Channel – Default channel shown is generally some ad. Which is not required. In cable network last seen channel comes
- Operating – Operating and changing channels are slow. While scrolling through channels, many channels cam to which we haven’t subscribed. We know we haven’t subscribed then why to show such channels. Irritating. Waste of Time
- Slow – It is very slow to load as compared to cable network
- Local – No local channels, news, entertainment
- TV – No utility of Television, controlled through Set Top Box
- STB – a Set top box has to be put. Additional space required
Some good experiences
- More channels – There are generally more options for channels (depends on package)
- Info – Info on channels is available
- Recording – Option to record
- Clarity – Clarity of picture
- Hang – Smooth streaming experience. Doesn’t hangs
- Weather reporter – Know when it is going to rain. Generally 3-6 seconds in advance
- No disturbance – Disturbance is screen is low compared to cable network
- Disconnection – No frequent disconnection based on power supply available
From the above points key bad experience is annoying. Why to show brand name, channel name and countdown. Much could be controlled by STB. Don’t show ads on starting screen, don’t show channels which aren’t subscribed.
